When any tile is at 1/7th you'll notice mud is created. Water will slowly fill your 3x3 area until all tiles are at 1/7. It is key to have a ramp or this won't work. Your dwarves will dump the water into the pond at the ramp. Stone floors can get a muddy covering if you flood them with water, or have dwarves throw buckets of water on them.
